The true meaning of Christmas..
Spending Christmas Eve hiding under a table in 90+km/h winds was not what I had planned…
I was going to write a post about Christmas and enjoying the things that matter most in life, instead of getting lost in the whole materialism and over-indulgence that often accompanies the silly season. Little did I know, the universe had a real world lesson in planned!
We’d been sitting and chatting to a lovely family we met and could see a storm slowly rolling in. After securing the awning I sat and chatted, watching the lightning off in the distance whilst Jaiden and a bunch of kids were playing. Next minute all hell broke loose and everybody was scurrying to secure awnings as anything that was not tied down was sent flying. Because we had a 100m walk back to our caravan, I was not going to risk running under a pile of trees due to the chance of debris injuring us. Rather, Jaiden and I sat cuddled up, under the park bench where it was safest. Jaiden was crying and very scared, he watched our Christmas tree get blown away and his little heart broke.
As the wind howled, I reminded him that even if we lost everything, at least we are together and safe, which is the most important thing. Eventually we made it to the caravan after the wind died down long enough for us to run back. We got inside and Jaiden gave me the hugest hug. I reminded him that whilst presents are great, the best thing in the world is being safe and healthy. He said to me “I am always thinking about presents, but I think being safe and happy is even better than presents”
So, on this Christmas day, don’t forget to take a moment and be grateful for what you do have in life. After all, being alive is the ultimate gift.
Merry Christmas to you all. xx
